The Shining Yi Peng Festival in Thailand

The Shining Yi Peng Festival in Thailand

The festival takes place across the nation during the full moon on a second half of November. The Buddhist celebration is meant to cleanse the spirit from bad luck by sending lanterns to Buddha.

It is a big fest for the locals and an inspiring sight for the visitors. People not only send lanterns to the sky, but also decorate their houses with flowers and candles, which creates the lifting atmosphere. The participators also get to see the parade, where dancers in traditional costumes send some love to the deity. The festival is the most exciting in Chiang Mai – the city in northern Thailand.

Although originally the fest was exceptionally the monks’ privilege, today everyone can participate. Even the tourists are allowed to send a lantern to the sky. Yi Peng attracts so many people, that the sight of the floating lights in the air is hypnotizing. So don’t miss your chance to respect Buddha and ask for some good luck.
