Pipes cross the ceiling, gauges crowd the walls and warm light falls across metal details. The room feels as though a fictional vessel has surfaced in the middle of Cluj-Napoca. Submarine Pub turns an ordinary night-out setting into a small exercise in imagination.

The Romanian project was created by 6th-Sense Interiors and circulated internationally in 2015. Its interest lies in how the designers made the theme work with the space, rather than simply adding a few nautical objects to a bar.

A vaulted room becomes an imagined submarine

The original design account describes a long space with a vaulted ceiling, divided into two rooms. Those proportions offered a starting point: a sequence of enclosed areas could suggest the compartments of an imagined submarine.

Look at the ceiling before looking at the decorative objects. Its curve helps hold the scene together. The pipes and lighting then reinforce a direction that was already present in the architecture.

The mechanical language of steampunk

The style draws on an imagined world of visible mechanisms, industrial materials and elaborate instruments. In this interior, control panels, doors, pipes and gauges make the setting feel full of systems that might do something, even where their role is decorative.

That is different from a technical reconstruction of a working submarine. The pleasure comes from the fiction: the room encourages you to imagine what lies beyond the next hatch or what a particular dial might control.

The designers’ bar and café portfolio preserves the Submarine project alongside other interiors, making it a useful primary source for comparing their approach.

Warm light against industrial surfaces

Metal surfaces and enclosed forms could easily feel severe. Here, the warm illumination gives the details depth and helps the bar remain a place where people might want to linger.

Notice which objects are highlighted and which recede into shadow. A themed interior does not need every detail to compete equally. The lighting can lead your eye through a sequence, much like an illustration or film set.

If you want to visit a venue associated with the project, verify its current operation before making a special trip. The historical design is still worth exploring even when your interest is simply architecture and visual storytelling.

Finding the idea behind an interior

On your next café or restaurant visit, try identifying the one choice that gives the space its character. It may be a material, the shape of the room or the way light is used.

For a very different imagined interior, compare Casa Brutale’s cliff-house concept. One uses abundant theatrical detail; the other relies on a few large architectural gestures. Both show how a setting can tell a story before anyone says a word.

Two bars and the practical side of the theme

The two bars give the imaginary vessel a practical layout: the larger room and the smaller room each have a place to order, with a booth adding another type of seating. That is where a themed pub has to succeed as an ordinary social space. People need to find a table, talk and move between areas, however elaborate the surrounding fiction becomes. The room’s proportions help the theme, but they also shape the evening spent inside it.

A periscope, a gauge and a bolted door do not need to be explained individually for the setting to make sense. Their repeated mechanical language does the work. Compare a densely decorated wall with the open space around a table: the contrast gives the eye somewhere to rest. That balance is useful beyond steampunk design. A memorable interior often has a clear idea, a few details that reward attention and enough breathing room for the people using it.
