Alex MacLean’s Aerial Photographs: Fields, Cities and Patterns from Above

From above, flower fields can resemble fabric and a harbour can look like a carefully arranged pattern. Alex MacLean’s photographs make everyday working landscapes feel unfamiliar, then invite you to work out what you are seeing.

The visual pleasure is only the beginning. These are places shaped by people: land cultivated, boats positioned and routes made through spaces that need to function.

A photographer interested in the built landscape

MacLean’s Landslides portfolio groups work around subjects including agriculture, transportation, dwellings and recreation. That range reflects an interest in how natural and constructed environments meet.

His photographs can be enjoyed as compositions while also prompting questions about land use. The image does not have to choose between being beautiful and being informative.

Flower fields in Lompoc

The photograph identified with Lompoc, California, is full of bands and blocks of colour. At first, the arrangement can look almost too deliberate to be agricultural.

Look for the paths and boundaries between the planted areas. They help turn the coloured pattern back into a place where people need to move, work and reach particular rows.

MacLean’s Flowers collection offers further examples of this subject. A flowering field is part of a working landscape, not automatically a public place to enter for photographs.

Boats near Tremont, Maine

In the harbour image, individual boats are scattered across a dark surface with a rhythm that becomes clearer from above.

Notice the spaces between them and the slight differences in direction. The arrangement is interesting precisely because it is not a perfectly repeated decorative motif.

The original caption places the scene near Tremont in Maine. Retaining that location helps connect the abstract impression to an actual coastal community.

Cultivated fields in Ohio

Curving tracks across green fields create a different kind of pattern. Here, the lines suggest movement and work rather than a static collection of objects.

Follow one curve until it meets another. Where does the pattern continue, and where does it stop at a boundary?

The Agriculture portfolio puts such images within a wider body of work. A photograph can show the organisation of a field without establishing its full environmental impact or the details of how it is managed.

Ask what the angle reveals—and hides

An aerial view can expose a relationship that is difficult to see at ground level. It can also make the people using the place almost invisible.

Try pairing the picture with a question about everyday life: who works here, how do they arrive and what changes with the season? The answer may require a map, a local account or another photograph.

Carry the curiosity into your own travels

You do not need an aircraft to notice how a place is arranged. A public viewpoint, a bridge or a hillside can reveal the relationship between streets, fields and water.

Look for one pattern, then ask what makes it useful to the people below. That second question is where an attractive view begins to become a richer understanding.

The Orlando wave pool and Cambridge swimming pool show leisure spaces organised into boundaries, water surfaces and surrounding circulation. Their geometry contrasts with the surfers off Sunset Beach on Oahu, where the open sea does not provide the same enclosing frame. These are three different relationships between people and water.

Aircraft and containers reveal stored movement

The Tucson aircraft scene and Portsmouth, Virginia, container image show objects built to move while they are temporarily arranged in rows. Storage creates a visual order that can disappear once an aircraft flies or a container leaves the yard. Describing every aircraft as rotting or abandoned would go beyond what the picture establishes.

Housing and golf courses reshape the ground

Beaverton’s residential pattern and the Las Vegas golf-course view complete the collection’s contrast between settlement and designed open space. From above, boundaries that feel ordinary at street level become strong lines. MacLean’s architectural interest is evident in this shift of scale: the individual building becomes one component in a much larger arrangement.
