Poveglia’s bell tower and overgrown waterfront have supplied the internet with years of dramatic stories. Yet the most useful question about this Venetian lagoon island is not whether it is haunted. It is who is caring for the place now, and what its next chapter might be.

The old “island for sale next month” framing is no longer a reliable guide. A newer community project deserves attention, along with a careful distinction between one part of the island and the entire site.

A documented change in 2025

According to Poveglia per tutti, the association received a six-year concession for the northern island from 1 August 2025. Its stated project is a lagoon urban park, with a focus on biodiversity and community use.

That is a specific development. It does not mean that every building has been restored, the whole island is freely accessible or any visitor can arrange an independent landing.

For travel planning, the association’s current announcements are more useful than a recycled auction story or an undated video.

Put the ghost stories in perspective

Poveglia’s past includes uses that have encouraged dark legends, and its abandoned-looking buildings make an atmospheric backdrop. But a dramatic setting is not evidence of supernatural events.

It is possible to be interested in the island’s history without repeating unverified accounts of torture, madness or haunting as fact. Ask which parts of a story are documented, which are local traditions and which exist mainly because they make a compelling headline.

The same care applies to photographs. An image can establish what a façade looked like at one moment. It cannot, by itself, explain the building’s whole history or its current condition.

Follow the project rather than improvising access

If you would like to learn more or participate in an organized activity, consult the association directly for current events and conditions. Check the meeting point, boat arrangements, permitted areas and cancellation information for that specific event.

Do not assume that a private boat booking grants permission to enter closed structures or land anywhere you choose. Weather and lagoon conditions also affect what is practical on a given day.

The community question gives Poveglia a future-facing story: how can a neglected place become useful without losing the qualities that make it distinctive?
