The Mediterranean can fill a holiday with small pleasures: a harbour walk, a shaded square, a meal that lasts longer than expected. The best starting point is a place where the kind of day you want is easy to enjoy.
These ten choices offer different combinations of coast, culture and landscape. Cádiz faces the Atlantic and broadens the selection beyond the Mediterranean shoreline.

Small coastal places with room to look around
- Collioure, France. Colour, waterfront architecture and an artistic heritage make a rewarding combination. Leave time to walk between viewpoints and explore the town’s connection with painting. A small place can deserve a long afternoon.
- Tellaro, Italy. The Ligurian village’s compact waterfront invites a slower visit. Respect residential space and arrange the approach before arrival; “small” does not mean undiscovered or guaranteed empty.
- Kotor, Montenegro. The old town sits within a dramatic bay landscape. Match any uphill walk to the conditions and your ability, and explore the streets below as a destination in their own right. A broad bay view and a town visit need not become the same strenuous outing.

Islands with different travel rhythms
- Mallorca, Spain. Compare a coastal base with time in the Serra de Tramuntana. The island offers more than a choice between a resort and nightlife. Select an area that supports the walks, towns or beach days you actually want.
- Corsica, France. Mountainous terrain and a varied coastline make journey times important. Give one region proper attention rather than treating a circuit of the island as an obligation. A shorter route can create more time outside the car.
- Santorini, Greece. The caldera is a distinctive landscape, while beaches and inland settlements provide other perspectives. Our Santorini guide helps turn the famous view into a more balanced visit.
- Cyprus. Choose a base around specific interests: archaeology, town life, mountain villages or time by the sea. Use current official information for access and any crossings you plan. Check how the island’s political boundaries affect your chosen route.
Two places where old pictures need context
- Cinque Terre, Italy. The five villages are linked by a transport and trail network, not one continuous path called the Via dell’Amore. That named walkway connects Riomaggiore and Manarola and has its own arrangements. Start with our Riomaggiore guide and check current trail conditions before choosing a walk.
- Dwejra, Gozo. The Azure Window collapsed in March 2017, so an old photograph of its arch is historical. The surrounding coastal landscape remains a reason to learn about the area. Visit Gozo introduces Dwejra and other places across the island; plan for the landscape that exists today.
Choose the season for your activities
Long walks, beach afternoons and city visits do not all favour the same weather. Check transport seasons and local conditions, then leave an easy alternative in the plan. The Mediterranean is more enjoyable when you give one corner time to become familiar.

Mediterranean inspiration, with two important qualifications
The Azure Window photographs document the arch before its collapse in 2017. Cádiz introduces an Atlantic coastal setting within this wider southern European collection. Both entries have a clear identity when their geography and dates are considered: one is a historical view of a vanished formation, and the other belongs to an ocean coast rather than the Mediterranean itself.
Collioure
Collioure’s harbour, painted façades and artistic associations explain why the place suits a visual travel feature. The references to Matisse and Derain connect the landscape with art rather than merely naming famous visitors. Anchovies and wine introduce another aspect of local identity. A slower visit can follow the relationship between waterfront and streets instead of treating the town as one fixed photo position.
Tellaro
Tellaro's tightly grouped houses and Ligurian coastal position give the village a strong visual identity. Look at the spaces between the buildings as well as the waterfront outline: a narrow lane, a change in level or a small opening towards the sea can shape the experience of walking there. Its compact size does not guarantee an empty visit. Arrange the approach and respect residential space, then allow enough time to appreciate those details instead of treating it as a single photograph to collect.
Kotor
Kotor combines a historic town with a dramatic bay setting. Its old streets offer a different experience from a beach-focused stay. Views across the water and views within the streets show different aspects of its appeal. The heritage designation gives historical context, while photographs explain how the settlement relates to the surrounding slopes. Choose a base that gives you time to explore both the town and its setting.
Mallorca
Mallorca is an island with urban, coastal and mountain settings. The Serra de Tramuntana reference introduces a cultural landscape rather than a claim that the entire island is one untouched wilderness. Beaches and entertainment areas are only part of the selection’s scope. Choosing a landscape or town focus helps avoid the impression that every pictured scene lies beside the same resort.
Cinque Terre
Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are five distinct villages within the Cinque Terre. The Via dell’Amore is one particular connection, not the name of a path joining all five. Each village meets the coast differently, with buildings, slopes and water forming its own arrangement. A walking plan needs the current status of the specific links chosen between those places.
Corsica
Corsica’s coastline is only one part of the island’s landscape. Food, history and scenery offer different ways to get to know its places and communities. Coastal photographs and settlement views give complementary introductions. An island itinerary needs choices about region and pace; the whole island should not be treated as a single compact seaside town.
Santorini
Santorini’s caldera-side settlements account for the familiar white-building panoramas. Those views do not represent every shore or neighbourhood on the island. The contrast between cliff-top architecture and the water below is the distinctive subject of the gallery. Allow for changing weather and busy moments when planning your time around the caldera. A hotel photograph also represents a particular property, not unrestricted public access to the same terrace.
Cádiz
Cádiz’s narrow peninsula and Atlantic setting are central to its appearance. Its inclusion broadens this list beyond the Mediterranean shoreline. Streets and sea views work together to show a city closely related to water without making it an undiscovered secret. Food and architecture offer two ways to explore Cádiz beyond the waterfront views.
The Azure Window, Gozo
The standing limestone arch in the photographs is historical. Its loss does not erase the value of the images: they document the appearance of a landmark that no longer exists in that form. Dwejra remains a place, but a present-day visit and an archive view of the arch are different subjects. Use the historical photographs to compare the former arch with the coastline visible today.
Cyprus
Cyprus closes the collection at island scale, with beaches, towns and cultural sites offering several different ways to organise a stay. Choose a particular interest and a base that supports it, then compare the distances to the places you hope to visit. A coastal photograph introduces one setting rather than an identical experience across the island. Use current official information for the exact routes and any crossings involved, leaving time to enjoy the neighbourhood around your accommodation as well as the main outings.
