Across a dark Atlantic map, bright lines gather into ribbons between North America and Europe. Seen together, individual flights become something larger: a pattern of departures, crossings and arrivals that is usually invisible from an aircraft seat.
NATS’s North Atlantic Skies remains an engaging way to see that pattern. It is also a good example of why the date and meaning of a visualisation matter as much as its colours.

A day of traffic, presented in 2014
The original NATS film page identifies the animation as a 2014 archive production. Its description gives a sample of 2,524 North Atlantic crossings over 24 hours, drawn from a day in August of the previous year.
Those figures describe that historical sample. They are not a live flight count or a promise that precisely the same number crosses every day now. The earlier headline rounding the number to 3,000 obscured what the animation actually represented.
The film is a data visualisation: the coloured paths have been drawn from traffic information. They are not luminous trails photographed from a satellite.
What is Shanwick?
The original explanation highlights the Shanwick Oceanic Control Area and reports 1,273 flights through it within the sample. Its name combines Shannon in Ireland and Prestwick in Scotland, reflecting the services associated with those locations.
That gives the map a useful second layer. The Atlantic is not simply a blank space between airports; flights pass through managed areas with responsibilities shared across organisations and countries.
Follow a pattern rather than every line
On a first viewing, let your eye follow one group of routes from its starting region towards the opposite coast. On another, pay attention to when traffic becomes concentrated and when it thins.
Three questions make the animation easier to interpret:
- Is the clock showing a full day or only part of it?
- Are you looking at all traffic in the stated area or a selected category?
- Do the colours represent a defined variable, or are they mainly a presentation choice?
If the legend does not explain something, resist supplying your own meaning. A brighter area might reflect overlapping paths rather than a measured difference in danger, delay or environmental impact.
Oceanic operations have continued to change
An archive animation should not be used as a current route-planning chart. For example, a NATS update from 2022 described removing the organised-track structure at Flight Level 330 and below from March that year, allowing greater routing flexibility in that part of the airspace.
That is one documented change, rather than a complete account of present procedures. The film’s value lies in revealing the scale and rhythm of a particular traffic sample.

A daily total and a peak are different numbers
The original description combined the sample’s 1,273 Shanwick flights with a statement that busy summer periods could reach 1,500 flights a day in that control area. Those numbers do not contradict one another: a particular day and a reported peak describe different things. They also do not justify changing the sample’s total of 2,524 Atlantic crossings into an exact 3,000-flight count. Keep the area, period and type of statistic together.
Concentration does not show simultaneous proximity
Lines can overlap in a time-compressed animation even when aircraft passed through a region at different times or levels. The visual density is useful for seeing a broad pattern, but it is not a direct picture of how close aircraft were to each other. Without the relevant dimensions and legend, the image cannot be used to infer a loss of separation.
Return to the clock on a second viewing
The first impression is often the network itself. On another viewing, use the changing time display to see how that network builds over the sample day. A full-day animation combines events that no passenger could see from one window. That is the contribution of the visualisation: it turns many separate records into a form that lets the audience notice a larger rhythm.
