Before sunrise, a balloon field has its own kind of anticipation: fabric laid out on the ground, crews preparing equipment and the occasional bright flare of a burner. Then colour begins to rise around you.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is worth planning for that whole experience, not only the photograph of a sky filled with balloons. Your choice of session and your willingness to adapt to weather will shape the visit.
Start with this year’s programme
The official Balloon Fiesta website lists the 2026 event for 3–11 October. Use its current schedule to choose dates and sessions, and recheck if you are reading this guide for a later year.
Morning ascensions, evening glows and other programme elements are different experiences. A glow generally involves illuminated balloons on the ground; it should not be booked with the assumption that the balloons will launch into the night.
The old article’s count of more than 700 balloons belonged to an earlier event. The number participating and the number able to fly on a particular day are not the same thing.
Make the early start easier
Prepare clothing, tickets and transport arrangements the evening before. Dress in layers for a cool start followed by changing daytime conditions.
Check the current parking or official Park & Ride arrangements, including the session they serve. Allow time for queues and walking from the arrival point rather than treating the advertised programme time as the moment to leave your hotel.
Bring only what the event permits and decide where your group will meet if separated. A large field becomes harder to navigate when everyone is looking upward.
Watch the crews as well as the sky
Inflation and preparation can be fascinating to observe. Stay clear of equipment, ropes and working areas, and follow crew or event staff directions promptly.
Do not touch a balloon or step across equipment for a photograph. Give the people preparing a flight enough space to concentrate on their work.
For photographs, include a person or a section of the field to show scale. A small detail near the ground can tell a different story from the wide view everyone hopes to capture.
Leave weather some room
Flights depend on suitable conditions, and a paid admission ticket cannot guarantee a launch. Read the event’s current weather and ticket policies before choosing how many sessions to attend.
If this is the main reason for your trip, consider leaving more than one opportunity in the itinerary. Keep another Albuquerque activity available for a cancelled flight programme or a free afternoon.
