A low daily-budget headline can be a useful invitation to investigate a destination. It becomes much less useful when old room prices, missing transfers and a different travel style are treated as a guarantee.

These five destinations offer different possibilities for a trip that uses your money well. Compare the actual places and dates you would choose, including the costs outside an ordinary sightseeing day.

1. Thailand: compare the complete route

A city stay, an island visit and a multi-stop journey can produce very different totals. Start with accommodation in the neighbourhood you want, then add the transport needed to reach your next base.

If time is short, fewer changes may leave more money and energy for the places themselves. Compare the transport needed for Phi Phi’s island setting with a cultural stop such as Chiang Rai’s White Temple in the north. Choose the region that fits the time you have.

Budget for the activities you actually care about. A theoretical day with no paid visits is not a useful comparison if a particular excursion is the reason you are going.

2. Bali: add transfers and the visitor levy

Compare the location of a room with your planned activities. A low nightly rate can lose its advantage if every outing requires a long paid transfer.

The provincial government’s Love Bali FAQ lists the foreign-tourist levy as IDR150,000 per person, with specified exemptions. Include it separately from any applicable immigration charges and check the official rules for your situation.

3. Greece: choose the season and base carefully

Compare a mainland or city stay with an island itinerary, then include every ferry, flight and transfer required. Room type and exact dates can matter more than a country-wide claim about cheap travel.

A destination’s economic difficulties are not a promise of low prices or a reason to treat the people providing your holiday as a bargain to exploit.

4. Nicaragua: compare places within the country

Use current travel advice and entry requirements alongside the cost comparison. A low accommodation quote alone cannot establish whether a trip fits your circumstances.

5. Budapest: read the transport product

A city pass can be useful, but only if it covers the journeys you need. BKK states that its 24-hour Budapest travelcard is not valid on the 100E Airport Express.

Compare accommodation, transport and your chosen attractions as a whole. A room farther out may work well if the connection is convenient for your actual plans.

Put the candidates on equal terms

Use the same trip length, room standard and activity expectations for each destination. Add flights, insurance, documents and a contingency before deciding which offers the best value.
