A dark wedge stretches through glowing cloud, pointing away from Mount Rainier while the sky around it turns pink and orange. The photograph can look like a piece of the sunrise has been removed.
What you are seeing is a mountain blocking low-angle sunlight. With the right arrangement of sun, mountain, cloud and observer, the shadow becomes visible on a much larger stage than the ground below.


Why the shadow can look so long
When the sun is low, an object’s shadow extends much farther than it does under high midday light. A large mountain can therefore create an impressive shadow through the atmosphere and across suitable cloud.
The appearance depends on where you are looking from and where the cloud lies. A ground-level view of shadow on cloud is different from looking outward along a mountain’s shadow from near its summit.

Cloud provides part of the picture
Cloud is not merely an obstacle hiding the mountain. In these images, it helps reveal the difference between illuminated and shaded areas.
The effect needs a particular alignment, so an attractive sunrise does not guarantee the same dark wedge. A different cloud height, a hidden sun or a change in viewpoint can produce a completely different scene.
That unpredictability is part of the appeal. The sky is not repeating a scheduled performance for the camera.
This is not the weather meaning of rain shadow
The phrase “rain shadow” usually describes a precipitation pattern associated with a mountain barrier. The long dark shape in these photographs is an optical shadow made by blocked light.
Keeping those ideas separate makes the explanation clearer. Both involve a mountain and the atmosphere, but they describe different processes.
Try looking at the photographs for the direction of the light first, then the position of the mountain and the shaded area. The geometry becomes easier to follow once those three parts are connected.
Enjoy the sky from a sensible viewpoint
You do not need to climb Mount Rainier to appreciate unusual light around it. Choose a permitted public viewpoint suited to your ability and the current conditions.

The mountain and the visible shadow need not share a frame
The original collection includes contributions credited to Shannon Winslow, Jessie Lin, Eric Richards, Reddit and The News Tribune. Their images belong to particular viewpoints and mornings. A cloud shape or colour in one photograph should not be assumed to match another simply because both are described as Mount Rainier’s shadow.
The key relationship is between the low Sun, the mountain that blocks its light and the material that makes the shaded region visible. A photograph may show the dark wedge much more clearly than the mountain itself. That does not make the wedge a second object in the sky; it records a difference in illumination.
Compare the edge of the shadow with the brighter cloud around it. The boundary can be more informative than the most vivid pink or orange colour. It helps separate the geometry of the effect from the colour of that particular sunrise and any processing applied to the image. A photograph from below a cloud layer also differs from a summit view looking along a mountain’s shadow. Keeping the observer’s position in mind avoids using one explanation for every triangular shadow photograph. The collection is an opportunity to read light carefully, not a calendar of a guaranteed daily display.
