Green, orange and muted purple appear in long patches across the trunk, as if someone has tested a paintbrush on the bark. Rainbow eucalyptus earns its common name through a natural process that is much more interesting than a painted-tree story.
The colours develop as the bark sheds and the newly exposed surface changes with age. Different patches are at different stages, creating the irregular pattern that catches the eye.



The colour comes from a changing surface
Singapore’s National Parks Board explains that Eucalyptus deglupta sheds bark unevenly in strips. Freshly exposed areas are green, then develop darker blue, purple, orange and maroon tones as they mature.
Because the process is patchy, the trunk carries several stages at once. The pattern is not a fixed design that every tree repeats in the same order or intensity.
Look for an edge where older bark meets a newly exposed area. That small transition helps explain the whole colourful surface.
Where the species belongs
Kew’s Plants of the World Online records the native range from the Philippines to Papuasia. Trees grown in gardens or planted landscapes elsewhere should not automatically be described as native to the country where a photograph was taken.
The specimen in the original gallery was described as being along Maui’s Hāna route. That is a cultivated travel setting, distinct from the species’ native range.
When a botanical garden labels a tree, read both the scientific name and the origin. Common names can be shared by unrelated plants, while the scientific name makes the identification clearer.
Expect variation in the photograph
Strong editing can make rainbow eucalyptus look almost fluorescent. The real bark is colourful, but light, moisture, the individual tree and camera processing all influence the result.
Try a wider frame that includes the trunk’s shape, then a close view of one patch. The two images together show both the tree and the process that makes it distinctive.
Keep the colour believable when sharing your photograph. The natural pattern does not need extra saturation to be worth noticing.
Enjoy the bark without peeling it
Do not pull away bark, scratch the surface or remove pieces to reveal a brighter colour. Let the tree shed on its own and stay within the permitted viewing area.
If you are interested in growing one, consult local horticultural guidance about mature size, climate and planting suitability. A tree admired on holiday is not automatically a practical choice for a small home garden.

Look beyond the brightest strip of bark
A close photograph can make the trunk seem like an abstract painting, but the coloured surface belongs to a whole tree. Step back in the gallery and look at the branching form and leaves as well as the bark. This changes the subject from a collection of unusual colours to an identifiable plant.
The National Parks Board’s description records pale flowers with many stamens and small capsule fruits. Those features are less prominent in the familiar travel photographs, yet they provide a reminder that bark colour is only one part of the species. The names Mindanao gum and rainbow gum refer to the same tree commonly called rainbow eucalyptus.
The original article described a specimen beside the Hāna route on Maui and also discussed a native range elsewhere. A planted tree can become a memorable part of a destination without being native there. Keep the photographed location distinct from the botanical range when writing a caption. Likewise, the colour sequence is not a timetable by which every patch changes on the same day. Uneven shedding allows different stages to appear together, which explains why two trunks—or two sides of one trunk—can look noticeably different.
