23-year-old Lillian Rafson, who had always been a passionate traveler, came up with the bright idea to start a travel company which would include the element of surprise. Very shortly, the idea behind Pack Up + Go has taken off. She had expected to plan around 50 to 100 journeys a year; however, within just six months of launching her company, Rafson had already planned around 250 trips.

You just fill out a quick questionnaire that explores all of the things that you like doing, you choose a budget range, and then Pack Up + Go does the rest of the job for you. They schedule your holiday, reserve your airplane tickets and book your accommodation. They even create a pre-planned itinerary for your 3-day weekend.

The company presents a list of things to pack so that you are well prepared. Additionally, they send you a sealed envelope that reveals your destination. You are allowed to open up the envelope when you deliver it, but to enjoy the full experience, Rafson recommends waiting until you arrive at the airport to find out your destination.

"A lot of people have said, 'I opened my envelope and wasn’t sure what to expect,' but they had a great time," says Rafson.

Most trips are three days and two nights. The company tries to find you a destination that’s within 4 hours of your home, either driving or flying so that you don’t waste half of your weekend on travel time.

Currently Pack + Go plans trips in the US only. Rafson wants to send most people to parts of the US that they might not visit on their own, like Portland, Maine or Burlington, Vermont.

Rafson explains, “We do send some customers to bigger cities like Chicago or Miami, but my favorite trips are to mid-size or small cities. Every city has a lot to offer. We're giving cities that people aren’t necessarily seeking out organically a chance to shine."

Road trips start at $450 per person when airplane trips start at $650 per person.
