A continent this large calls for a little selectiveness. Rather than turning its most dramatic photographs into one impossible itinerary, choose a landscape and give the surrounding region time.

The ten places in the complete selection offer different experiences. Some are best understood from an overlook; others call for a boat ride or a carefully chosen walk.

Waterfalls with different ways to visit

  1. McWay Falls, California. The coastal setting is remarkable, but the beach is not an authorised destination reached by scrambling down or arriving by boat. California State Parks also posts a long-term closure of the overlook trail for repair work. Check the park’s current notice before planning this stop; an old photograph is not access advice.
  2. Multnomah Falls, Oregon. The two-tier waterfall is a popular Columbia River Gorge landmark. Check the official visitor information for the relevant season’s parking, permits and trail conditions. Choose your walking goal before arrival instead of assuming that every viewpoint is open.
  3. Niagara Falls, Canada and the United States. Decide which side you intend to visit and whether crossing the international border is part of the day. Viewing areas and boat experiences offer different perspectives; allow time to enjoy one rather than racing between every option.

Freshwater landscapes

  1. Hamilton Pool, Texas. The rock shelter and pool make an impressive natural setting. A reservation to visit does not automatically promise swimming or access beneath every section of rock. Our Hamilton Pool guide explains why current park notices are central to the plan.
  2. Caddo Lake, Texas and Louisiana. Cypress trees and wetland channels give this freshwater landscape its character. A guided paddle can help visitors understand the setting without treating it as a maze to enter unprepared. Its wildlife belongs to a freshwater and wetland environment.
  3. Moraine Lake, Alberta. The mountain backdrop is only part of the visit; arranging the approach matters too. Parks Canada’s Lake Louise and Moraine Lake information explains shuttle and access arrangements. Private vehicles are generally prohibited on Moraine Lake Road, so do not plan around simply arriving earlier to find parking.

Canyon country

  1. Zion National Park, Utah. Begin with a realistic choice of route. A canyon sightseeing day, a strenuous exposed hike and a technical or water-based trip are different undertakings. Use the park’s current guidance for permits and conditions. Nearby Kanarra Creek should not be presented as a trail inside Zion.
  2. Grand Canyon, Arizona. Pick a rim and a manageable set of viewpoints before considering a descent. The return from a downhill walk requires climbing back up, and conditions below the rim can differ greatly from the starting point. Give its changing layers, shadows and side valleys time to become distinct.

Give the landscape room

Group nearby experiences and leave spare time for changing weather or access. A practical road trip plan helps keep the journey comfortable. The goal is to enjoy the place you reach, not to reproduce a gallery before sunset.

Ten named places, with the viewpoint separated from the activity

This North American selection moves between waterfalls, lakes, a canyon, a national park, a glacier and a Mexican coastal landscape. A beautiful photograph of any of these ten places is not, by itself, a recommendation to swim, boat or enter a cave there. The route to a view and access to the feature itself can be very different things.

McWay Falls

The Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park setting is primarily a viewpoint story. The beach is not an authorised landing or walking destination. The waterfall, cove and surrounding cliffs are the subject of the photographs; look at their relationship as parts of a changing coastline.

Hamilton Pool

The limestone overhang and pool create a recognisable natural amphitheatre. A site visit and permission to enter the water are separate matters, so check both before planning to swim. The photographs can explain the form of the place while current reservations and water access remain tied to the preserve’s own information.

Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake's cypress trunks and reflections give the freshwater wetland a distinctive appearance. A low view across the water emphasises the spaces between trees, while a shoreline view can reveal a different part of the setting. Begin with a defined visitor area or a suitable guided outing so the landscape has a clear route and return. The lake spans a wider area than a single frame suggests, and its freshwater and wetland wildlife belongs to that broader environment.

Multnomah Falls

The two-tiered waterfall and Benson Bridge provide the composition’s main landmarks. A view of the bridge does not mean it is always the best or currently accessible position for every visitor. For cultural history, look for interpretation that identifies the community and source of the account. This adds context to the Oregon landscape without assuming one story represents every Indigenous tradition.

Zion National Park

Zion Canyon, Angels Landing and the Subway are different locations or routes within the broader park story. Kanarra Creek should not be casually counted as another feature inside Zion. Ordinary sightseeing and technical outings require different preparation. Check the route and arrangements for each named place rather than assuming they can all be reached by the same kind of walk.

Mendenhall’s ice

Mendenhall's ice-cave photographs record a temporary space within a moving glacier. Curves, light and a small human figure can make the ice look like an architectural interior, but its form and stability change. Appreciate the pictures as dated observations, then use current official local information to choose an authorised way to experience the glacier landscape. A view from a designated trail or visitor area can have its own interest without requiring the same opening in the ice to exist or be entered.

Balandra near La Paz

The Balandra entry is a coastal-landscape story in Baja California Sur. The lagoon, surrounding slopes and shore form the visual identity. Check the facilities and water conditions for the particular area you intend to visit. A turquoise photograph cannot establish depth, water quality or conditions for a particular activity. Explore Balandra as a coastal landscape, and check conditions separately before planning to swim.

Moraine Lake

The Valley of the Ten Peaks association gives Moraine Lake its mountain setting. Its blue-water photographs and surrounding slopes can be described without claiming that popular scenery creates guaranteed tranquillity. Use Parks Canada’s current information to arrange your approach. The lake view itself and a longer mountain walk belong to different levels of outing, even when they begin in the same broader area.

The Grand Canyon

The Colorado River is central to the canyon’s story, while its exposed rock layers record different parts of geological history. Indigenous connections with the canyon continue today. The photographs show a vast landscape that remains connected with living communities as well as tourism and scientific study.

Niagara Falls

Niagara consists of several falls across the US–Canada setting, rather than one undivided cascade. Winter ice around the falls and illuminated views show different moments in the same landscape. The winter photographs record conditions at the time they were taken. A photograph of accumulated ice should not be read as proof that the whole river stopped, just as a night image does not describe the daytime appearance.
