The Mediterranean can fill a holiday with small pleasures: a harbour walk, a shaded square, a meal that lasts longer than expected. The best starting point is a place where the kind of day you want is easy to enjoy.

These nine choices offer different combinations of coast, culture and landscape. Cádiz is a wonderful coastal city, but it faces the Atlantic and therefore sits outside this Mediterranean shortlist.

Small coastal places with room to look around

  1. Collioure, France. Colour, waterfront architecture and an artistic heritage make a rewarding combination. Leave time to walk between viewpoints and explore the town’s connection with painting. A small place can deserve a long afternoon.
  2. Tellaro, Italy. The Ligurian village’s compact waterfront invites a slower visit. Respect residential space and arrange the approach before arrival; “small” does not mean undiscovered or guaranteed empty.
  3. Kotor, Montenegro. The old town sits within a dramatic bay landscape. Match any uphill walk to the conditions and your ability, and explore the streets below as a destination in their own right. A broad bay view and a town visit need not become the same strenuous outing.

Islands with different travel rhythms

  1. Mallorca, Spain. Compare a coastal base with time in the Serra de Tramuntana. The island offers more than a choice between a resort and nightlife. Select an area that supports the walks, towns or beach days you actually want.
  2. Corsica, France. Mountainous terrain and a varied coastline make journey times important. Give one region proper attention rather than treating a circuit of the island as an obligation. A shorter route can create more time outside the car.

  4. Cyprus. Choose a base around specific interests: archaeology, town life, mountain villages or time by the sea. Use current official information for access and any crossings you plan. The island’s political geography should not be flattened into a generic holiday description.

Two places where old pictures need context

  1. Cinque Terre, Italy. The five villages are linked by a transport and trail network, not one continuous path called the Via dell’Amore. Choose the season for your activities

Long walks, beach afternoons and city visits do not all favour the same weather. Check transport seasons and local conditions, then leave an easy alternative in the plan. The Mediterranean is more enjoyable when you give one corner time to become familiar.
