Yellowstone is famous for colour and movement at ground level. In Dave Lane’s night photographs, the sky becomes just as expressive: the Milky Way stretches above geothermal pools, while faint atmospheric light adds another layer to the scene.

The result is striking partly because it joins two very different scales. The pool and boardwalk belong to a place a visitor can stand; the band of stars reaches far beyond it.

A photograph with an identifiable maker

The older article’s general account of multiple exposures and adjusted colour should not be treated as an exact technical recipe for every frame. A photographer’s processing choices need to remain attached to the particular image they describe.

Why the sky looks different in a photograph

A camera can collect light over time and combine views into a panorama. That can reveal detail and colour differently from a person looking up at the same location. A wide curved band across a stitched image also reflects how the scene is presented.

Airglow is faint light emitted in Earth’s upper atmosphere. It is not the same phenomenon as a bright auroral display, and a photograph can make subtle atmospheric colour more conspicuous than it appears to the eye.

These distinctions add to the interest. You are seeing the landscape through a set of deliberate photographic choices, not receiving a guarantee of an identical visual experience on a particular night.

Yellowstone’s ground rules still apply after sunset

Thermal areas require visitors to stay on authorised boardwalks and trails. Darkness does not make the ground beyond them safer, and a better camera angle is not a reason to step off.

Read the National Park Service’s safety guidance and current local notices before choosing a night outing. Know the route back, carry suitable lighting and clothing, and maintain the required distance from wildlife. Check whether the location and route you plan to use are open.

Give the sky enough time

Choose a permitted place where you can remain comfortably without obstructing others. Let your eyes adjust, keep unnecessary light to a minimum and enjoy what is visible even if conditions differ from the famous picture.
