Etna's night sky became spectacular in early December 2015. A powerful eruption from the Voragine crater sent incandescent material and an ash plume above the summit, with lightning adding brief flashes to the scene.

Photographs associated with Marco Restivo and footage shared at the time made the event widely visible. This is a historical eruption, not a report that the same activity is happening today.

One episode in an active volcanic system

The December event belonged to a sequence of intense activity at Voragine. Etna has several summit craters, so a pause at one crater should not be described as the entire volcano lying dormant.

The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program's Etna record brings observations from monitoring organisations into a chronological account. That kind of record is more useful for understanding activity than a single spectacular image without its date.

Etna's shape and summit elevations can change through eruptions and collapse. An old fixed height is therefore a poor way to introduce current summit conditions, and it adds little to understanding this particular event.

Why an ash plume can produce lightning

Volcanic lightning is an electrical discharge associated with an eruption plume. The US Geological Survey's explanation describes several regions where discharges can occur, from close to the vent to higher parts of the plume.

Charge can develop through processes involving volcanic particles, their fragmentation and interactions, with water and ice also relevant in some plume conditions. Reducing the whole phenomenon to one simple rubbing mechanism misses that variety.

The lightning and the glowing eruption material are different sources of light. A photograph may record both, producing the dramatic contrast that makes the scene look almost unreal.

Read the photograph before drawing a conclusion

Check the volcano, crater, date and photographer. Eruption images are frequently shared long after the event, and a striking photograph from one volcano can easily be attached to a story about another.

Exposure time and camera settings also affect the result. A still image can gather light over an interval and show details differently from what a person would see moment by moment.

The photograph cannot establish a safe viewing distance or predict what the volcano will do next. Those questions require current monitoring information and local instructions.
