Turquoise water is a wonderful invitation, but it leaves several useful questions unanswered. How do you reach the beach? Is the entry rocky? What happens when the wind changes? And is the picture showing the conditions you can expect today?
Use this selection to compare the whole beach experience. It is not a scientific ranking of Greece’s clearest water. The European Environment Agency explains that bathing-water classifications depend on monitoring, including bacteria levels, rather than the colour of a photograph.

Crete: give the approach some thought
Elafonisi is known for pale sand, shallow-looking colours and the pink tones visible in parts of the shore. Check the journey from your base and plan shade and water for the day. Leave sand and shells where they belong.
Balos is a more involved outing than a beach beside a town promenade. Compare the actual access offered by your chosen boat trip or land approach, including the return. Our Chania guide helps put western Crete into a realistic itinerary.
Ionian choices: beautiful does not always mean calm
Kathisma, Lefkada, faces an open stretch of sea. Evaluate the conditions when you arrive rather than assuming that a bright blue photograph means gentle water. Make the beach day flexible enough to choose another setting if necessary.
Rovinia, Corfu, offers a different, smaller-bay setting. Check the exact approach and what facilities you can rely on. A picturesque cove may involve more walking and less shade or infrastructure than a resort beach.
Beaches where the route matters especially
Lalaria, Skiathos, is associated with a boat outing. Ask how the operator handles conditions and whether landing is possible on the day. Enjoy its distinctive shore without taking pebbles home.
Tsigrado, Milos, has a demanding land approach involving ropes and ladders, as described by Discover Greece. That makes it a poor fit for some visitors regardless of how appealing the water looks. Choose another Milos beach if the access does not suit you.
Anthony Quinn Bay, Rhodes, has a rocky setting that deserves attention when entering or leaving the water. Think about the practical route to your chosen spot, not simply the shortest distance from the car park.
For a longer, less complicated beach day
Simos, Elafonisos, gives you two stretches of sand around a narrow connection. The official destination experience introduces the setting. Check the breeze on each side and keep to established access around the dunes.
Italida, Koufonisi, is also called Platia Pounta. Confirm which beach a map or operator means, then decide how much walking and how many stops you want in the day. Pack for the facilities actually available rather than a generic island expectation.
Plaka, Naxos, is a good place to think in terms of a coastal base rather than a single quick stop. Different sections offer different surroundings and distances from accommodation. Our Naxos guide helps connect the beach choice with the rest of the holiday.
Four checks before you settle in
Look at the current conditions and local notices, identify a comfortable way in and out, know where shade and drinking water will come from, and keep enough time for the return journey. No view obliges you to swim.
For a wider comparison of Greek coastal holidays, explore ten beach escapes. The right bay is the one that lets you enjoy the day comfortably, whether the photograph you bring home is turquoise, deep blue or a little windswept.

Which Greek beaches appear in the gallery?
The original ten-image gallery includes Paradise Beach on Corfu and Navagio on Zakynthos. Rovinia and Plaka, discussed above, are additional options rather than alternative names for those pictured beaches. This distinction matters when matching a photograph to a map. The remaining original names are Elafonisi, Kathisma, Lalaria, Balos, Anthony Quinn Bay, Italian Beach on Koufonisia, Simos and Tsigrado. Informal names such as ‘Paradise’ or ‘Italian Beach’ need local confirmation before arranging transport; a familiar label alone does not identify the precise landing or approach.
Clear-looking water is a visual quality, not a measure of safe swimming conditions or guaranteed access. A photograph of Navagio, Lalaria or Tsigrado does not establish that the approach shown or implied remains available. Compare the setting you want—lagoon, open coast or small cove—then check the specific beach rather than treating ten very different shorelines as interchangeable.
