From a distance, the river seems to have acquired an island of grass. Move closer in the photographs and the surface resolves into floating plants, gathered in dense patches beneath bridges and beside the city skyline.

These images circulated in 2015 as a story from Huizhou, in China’s Guangdong province. They are striking urban-nature photographs, but the green appearance leaves several important questions unanswered.

Start with what the photograph shows

The visible features are floating vegetation, open water around some patches and buildings along the river. The images record the extent of the plants at the moment they were made.

They do not, by themselves, establish the water’s chemistry, the plants’ growth rate or the exact cause of the accumulation. Nor do they prove that the whole city’s waterways looked this way.

The earlier article used the name “duckweed”. The available archive does not provide a reliable botanical identification, so it is more accurate to describe floating aquatic plants than to assign a species with confidence.

Green does not automatically mean healthy

Nitrogen and phosphorus are normal parts of aquatic ecosystems, but an excess can create serious problems. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s explanation of nutrient pollution describes how nutrient enrichment can drive excessive algal growth and reduce oxygen available to aquatic life.

Algae and the leafy plants visible here are not the same thing. The broader lesson is that abundant growth is not a simple water-quality certificate. Understanding a particular river requires measurements and local ecological knowledge.

A useful plant in one setting can be a problem in another

Aquatic plants have ecological roles, and some are used within deliberately managed treatment systems. That does not mean an uncontrolled mat in a river can be assumed to remove every pollutant or improve every aspect of the habitat.

Ask better questions of an environmental image

If a similar scene catches your attention, look for a dated account from the local water or environmental authority. Useful information would identify the plants, describe the measured conditions and explain any management response.

Claims that a floating mat prevents mosquitoes, guarantees clean water or protects all young fish need evidence for the actual situation. A pleasing colour cannot settle those questions.

Keep the curiosity, add the context

The photographs remain fascinating because they show a changing river inside a built-up landscape. Looking carefully makes them more useful, not less enjoyable.
