The Phi Phi Islands offer a wonderfully dramatic mix of limestone cliffs, turquoise water and beaches tucked into the coastline. The practical challenge is deciding how you want to experience them. A fast-moving boat excursion and several nights on an island can share some views while feeling like completely different holidays.
Start with that choice. Then make the famous names on your itinerary precise enough to understand what you are actually booking.
Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh are different
Phi Phi Don is the main island for accommodation and everyday visitor services. Phi Phi Leh is the island associated with Maya Bay and other popular boat stops. A hotel described as being in “Phi Phi” does not mean you will sleep beside Maya Bay or walk there from your room.
Likewise, a ferry transfer to Phi Phi Don is not automatically a sightseeing cruise around the islands. Check the destination pier and what happens after arrival, especially if your accommodation requires another boat connection.

Choose a day trip for variety
A day excursion can suit travellers staying in Phuket or the Krabi area who want a coastal outing without changing hotels. Compare the real departure point, time on the water, number of stops and the size of the group. A hotel pickup advertised under one destination name may still involve a substantial drive before the boat leaves.
Ask which activities are essential to the plan and what substitutes are used when conditions change. Swimming, snorkelling and a beach landing are separate activities; a scenic passage beside a bay should not be presented as the same experience as time ashore.
Choose the excursion for the whole day it offers, rather than a promise of one empty-beach photograph.
Stay overnight for a different pace
A stay on Phi Phi Don gives you more control over your time and the chance to explore after many day visitors have departed. It also requires a closer accommodation decision: proximity to the main pier, evening noise, beach character and onward boat access can matter as much as the room itself.
Our suggested first island day keeps arrival simple. Reach your accommodation, settle in and explore locally before adding an ambitious boat outing. On departure day, leave a comfortable margin between the ferry and any flight or long-distance connection.
Maya Bay needs a separate access check
Maya Bay has seasonal conservation closures and managed visiting rules. Operators including Simba Sea Trips describe August–September substitutions in their itineraries. For a September 2026 trip, do not assume that an advertised Phi Phi excursion includes a Maya Bay landing; obtain the current park-access position and the actual alternative route before paying.
Even when a bay is open to visitors, that does not mean every form of water activity is permitted. Follow the park team’s instructions and distinguish viewing the beach from swimming there. The wider islands can remain part of a holiday even when one celebrated stop is unavailable.
Make the water day a good one
Sea conditions affect comfort, timing and routes. Be candid with an operator if anyone in your group is uneasy on small boats or needs a gentler activity. Keep marine life undisturbed and use the designated places for entering the water.
