An airliner among trees is an arresting sight. In Bruce Campbell’s Oregon project, the familiar outline of a Boeing 727 has become the shell of a home, with its aviation history still plainly visible.
The interest goes beyond the novelty of sleeping in an aircraft. This is a case study in adapting an existing object, solving awkward practical problems and deciding which original features deserve to remain.

The aircraft at the centre of the project
Campbell’s AirplaneHome.com identifies the project as a Boeing 727-200 home. The site documents the conversion through photographs, explanations and progress material.
The long fuselage, windows and access points create a very different starting point from a conventional house. Instead of designing a building from an empty plan, the project works within a form that already has a strong identity.
In the selected photographs, the surrounding woodland makes that identity even more surprising. The aircraft is unmistakable, although its daily purpose has changed completely.
Moving it was part of the cost
In his historical cost account, Campbell distinguishes the aircraft purchase from the logistics. He reports paying about $100,000 for the aircraft in 1999, with roughly another $120,000 for staging, dismantling, moving and related work.
Those figures describe his project at a particular time. They are not a current price for buying an aircraft home, and they should not be confused with the cost of the land or a complete contemporary building budget.
The distinction is useful for any ambitious reuse idea: acquiring the object can be only one part of making it usable in a new place.
A conversion has ordinary household questions too
Before getting carried away by the exterior, consider the things every home needs: comfortable temperatures, water, sanitation, electricity, access and maintainable living space.

An aircraft’s original engineering does not automatically certify it as a residence or make it immune to storms, earthquakes or other hazards. A particular conversion needs its own assessment, permissions and suitable systems.

Check the owner’s arrangements before visiting
This is a private project with specific visitor information. Read the current instructions and confirm arrangements before travelling. Do not treat photographs or an old article as permission to arrive unannounced.
Pay particular attention to access, parking and neighbouring properties. If your group has mobility requirements, discuss them directly rather than assuming the aircraft approach works like a museum entrance.
Events and any other offerings should be checked separately through the owner’s current announcements.
Look at what has been retained
When exploring the project through its photographs, choose one surviving aviation detail: a window, a doorway or the shape of the cabin. Consider how it affects the new use of the space.
That is the most engaging part of the story. The building has not lost its earlier identity; it asks the resident to live with it in a new way.
