Río Celeste’s pale blue water looks almost painted into the green forest. At the waterfall, the colour gathers in a pool beneath a bright white cascade; farther along the river, it moves between rocks and vegetation. The explanation is fascinating, and it does not require a magical ingredient.

The river is a principal attraction of Tenorio Volcano National Park in Costa Rica. Plan for a forest walk with viewpoints, rather than a day swimming beneath the famous waterfall.

Why the river looks blue

A 2013 study in PLOS ONE investigated the unusual colour and linked it to the scattering of light by suspended aluminosilicate particles. Changes where tributary waters meet influence the particles and the way the blue appearance develops.

In simple terms, what you see depends on how light interacts with material in the water. The old explanation that a straightforward reaction between sulphur and calcium carbonate “dyes” the river is misleading. The water’s appearance is an optical effect within a particular natural setting.

This also helps explain why you should not expect every photograph and every visit to show exactly the same shade. Rain, sediment, light and viewing conditions can influence what is visible. A darker or less vivid day does not mean someone has switched off the attraction.

Choose the walk you want to do

The SINAC Tenorio Volcano National Park page introduces the waterfall, Laguna Azul and other features along the visitor route. Use the current park information to check admission and which sections are open.

Our suggested visit begins with a decision about effort: is the waterfall your main goal, or do you want to continue along the permitted forest trail to see more of the river? The descent to the waterfall viewpoint means climbing back up afterwards. Include that return in your plan before adding farther sections.

Do not judge the whole outing from the straight-line distance between two map pins. Steps, wet ground and time spent at viewpoints change the pace considerably.

Enjoy the water from the permitted places

Water entry is not allowed in the national park’s visitor waters. A photograph of a beautiful blue pool is not a swimming invitation, and an old article recommending a dip should not override current park instructions.

Stay on the marked route and use the designated viewpoints. Let the sound and movement be part of the experience: a few quiet minutes beside the river can be more memorable than another hurried attempt to maximise the colour on a camera screen.

Build the day around conditions

Arrange the journey from your actual base and confirm the correct entrance. Bijagua is a useful location to understand when comparing nearby accommodation and transport, but a hotel described as being in the wider area may still require a drive to the park.

Choose footwear for a damp trail and carry a layer that suits the forecast. Keep some flexibility in the rest of the day so rain or a slower walk does not force you into a rushed return. If the blue colour is your main interest, ask about recent conditions while recognising that nobody can guarantee a precise shade.

The colour is an optical effect, not a blue dye

Research on Río Celeste identifies light scattering by suspended aluminosilicate particles as the explanation for its remarkable colour. This is different from the older claim that sulphur and calcium carbonate combine to make a blue substance. The study examined how the particles behave where the tributaries meet, connecting a visible landscape feature with a process at a much smaller scale. The blue appearance is a property of how light interacts with the water and particles, not a reason to expect a bottle of water to look like the whole river.

That explanation makes the walk more interesting. A waterfall photograph shows the colour gathered into a broad pool, while a narrower channel reveals the relationship between water, pale rock and shade. Changes in light and river conditions can alter what the eye and camera record. A gallery should therefore show the river’s range of appearances rather than imply one unchanging shade.

The trail is also more than its total length. Reaching a waterfall viewpoint can involve a descent that must be climbed again, and wet ground changes the effort involved. The old assurance that almost anyone can manage the route because it is short is not a useful assessment of an individual visitor’s needs. Choose the permitted sections that suit your group, and keep the park’s bathing restrictions separate from descriptions of hot water elsewhere in the landscape.
